Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe strongly in the role of government and are taught to participate in it at various levels. For some, this means doing community service or writing letters. For others, it means holding public office. You’ll find members of the church serving in public offices all over the world and in many different political parties. The church does not endorse parties or candidates, encouraging members to study and pray as they make their decisions.
Elder L. Tom Perry, a high ranking church leader, has said. “Through our understanding and study of the scriptures, we have a knowledge of the laws of the Lord by which we should govern our earthly conduct. With this great blessing comes an obligation to be a part of the communities in which we live. Our influence should be felt to safeguard the moral standards in the villages, in the towns, and in the cities where our homes are located in all parts of the world. I challenge you to become involved in lifting the moral standards of the communities where your homes are.” (Ensign, May 1977, p. 61.)
